Breakfast with God 20251013

Post by Roby.evans »

Good morning, my morning bible study was in the Gospel of Mark and this question jumped out at me from 10:21. Jesus told the young ruler to, “take up the cross and follow Me”. Just a note: Several translations have omitted the take up the cross portion.

The “Taking up the cross” was a way for Jesus to direct us to make a decision and a commitment to Him, no matter the cost, even to death, to deny ourselves and to focus on Him, a picture of love for others than self, and lastly as a measure of strengthening our relationship with God.

My question to you and to me is, are WE taking up the cross daily? Are WE putting Him first in out lives regardless of the cost? Are WE showing the Love and compassion and commitment He showed us to others?

Just some thought provoking scripture this morning.

Philippians 4:13

Why do some translations omit the 'picking up the cross' bit?

I am writing a book that details the differences in translations verse by verse. There are some translations that eliminate completely entire verses.

Josh, Yes. in regards to the question above as to "why", many of the translations of the original scripture vary in degree of detail. some are word for word translations while others are thought for thought and others are a paraphrase translation. The NKJV and NASB are your more word for word and the NIV/NLT are paraphrased and even some like the CSB are designed to give an easier reading experience, I will attach a chart showing the spectrum of translations. Personally, I use the NASB and NKJV.
