novice hunter 12/19

Post by airfieldop »

Good morning all:

I am starting this campfire a bit early but here it goes.

We are going to Alaska for a hunting trip (nothing big) and taking a novice shooter/hunter along she is a small framed and petite female.

So with that said what do you think she should be shooting/carrying 270 win or 30-06 or 308 keep in mind weight of rifle (base weight), recoil.

Should she use optics or iron sights.

Keep in mind that I can reload any of the above caliber ammo but would like suggestions.

Lets hear it

Whatcha hunting?
Will she be left for bait?
Can she out run you?
Able to hit target at 300 yards?
Able to hit target at 300 yards after running up 3 flights of stairs with pack on?
Side arm for close range?
Guided hunt, or bushwhacking?

All necessary questions to validate 3006. I think l have some 200+ gr grand slams l can send you...

I would recommend 270. My daughter shoots that. She is also petite.

I would say yes to a scope but if you have time I would take her to the range to get familiar.

So the intent is no game larger than Caribou
inside of 300 yards
She is not bait
yes she can out run me
she prefers a 1911 for a side arm
Guided hunt
We plan to get her a lot of range time before the trip to get her comfortable

Got it. YOU are the bait.
Im still a die-hard 3006 guy. M1 garand or bolt, doesnt matter. You can always load out recoil with Trail Boss powder. Yes, there is a 10% speed reduction, but a 70% recoil reduction. Makes shooting a 30-06 fun. :)

Seat bullet in case, mark case whete bottom of bullet would be. Thats 100% capacity. Multiply by 0.7 and that is the 70% starting load. Work up from there
