Nagant Revolver 7.62X38R

Post by GunnerH.65 »

Hello,
I was today years old when I found out about the 7.62 x38R Nagant pistol. I have no idea how this ever escaped me until now. I have recently purchased Mosin Nagant rifles which I've known about for years. I absolutely love the simplicity of these rifles. I kind of fell in love with the Nagant pistol today. I've been watching videos of people shooting them with both modern Factory loads and older surplus loads. The modern factory loads seem pretty wimpy compared to the surplus loads. Factory loads shooting at around 700 fps and surplus loads at around 1100 fps. Realizing that these are pistols that were manufactured, on average, around the late 1800's - 1930s, I don't understand why the factory loads are so much lower, in speed, and power, compared to the surplus ammunition, that these old pistols appear to be able to handle without issue. I thought about the safety, and liability, issues that may be considered, by modern manufacturers, but have seen other modern ammo perform as good, if not better, than surplus ammo, in firearms that were just as old.

Does anybody, in the group, have, first-hand, experience with these? I'm interested in the difference between the factory and surplus loads. Also, is this a type of ammunition that can be easily reloaded on a single stage press. Are the dies, etc., readily available? Any information about this firearm, reloading, and the ammunition, would be greatly appreciated. TY.

I have one. Fun to shoot but not at all accurate. It takes some practice to load. Especially if you are converting brass.
